Rhode Island Red

Developed in the late 1800s, Rhode Island Reds get their name from America's smallest state.

This breed is an extremely efficient layer making it famous worldwide and the parent to several modern hybrid egg layers.

Rhode Island Reds or RIR for short display glossy mahogany feathers throughout their body with black tail feathers.

RIR roosters are one of the most beautiful I have ever seen.

This breed is gentle and productive making it one of the best homestead chickens.

About the Breed:

Purpose: egg layer production: ~265 large brown eggs/year

Temperament: curious and friendly

Mature weight: 6-7 pounds

Hardiness: cold and heat hardy

Broodiness: occasionally

Comb type: single comb

If you are looking for a breed that is productive and sustainable, look no further than the beautiful Rhode Island Red.
